Athletes 4 Cancer's Camp Koru is our beneficiary this year! Athletes 4 Cancer empowers young adults with cancer to rebuild their lives through outdoor adventure.

The 2014 Round the Rock SUP Race & EXPO is once again a non-profit event and all net proceeds will benefit Athletes for Cancer and their Camp Koru Survivorship Program. This terrific organization offers adventure-based experiences to young cancer survivors as channels of healing, achievement and life-renewal that treat the mind, body, and soul.

Through surfing, standup paddling, outrigger canoeing and snowboarding experiences, survivors overcome anxiety, fear, and personal obstacles to achieve personal success in the water and snow that they carry back into their daily lives. The experience empowers survivors to find strength, direction, move beyond their cancer and take charge of their lives. Learn more about the program by visiting www.athletes4cancer.org. 6 TIPS TO ELEVATE YOUR FUNDRAISING

Learn more with the 2014 Round the Rock Fundraising Toolkit: http://roundtherock.com/2014RTRfundraisingtoolkit_final.pdf

#1 START THE FUNDRAISING PROCESS EARLY
Timing is everything. We don't want people to just hit goals; we want them to exceed them.

#2 LOSE YOUR INHIBITION TO ASK PEOPLE FOR MONEY
Getting over this hurdle is one of the most important steps to getting started. Recognize that this is truly a selfless act that will benefit others and be proud. Others will appreciate and respect your enthusiasm for the cause.

#3 FIND YOUR PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THE CAUSE
To be an effective advocate for Athletes 4 Cancer, you must have conviction about the work it does and the people who benefit from it. Some have very direct links to the cause.

#4 CRAFT A COMPELLING MESSAGE
Your message has to be impactful and explain why you are raising money for Athletes 4 Cancer and why the charity deserves it. Let the strength of your story draw the appropriate donations. And remember to ask them to forward the request on to others who may support the cause.

#5 LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA
Tell your story on Facebook and Twitter. People will "like" and retweet your story to others who may donate.

#6 SEND A PERSONALIZED THANK YOU NOTE TO EVERY CONTRIBUTOR
Make sure that everyone who makes a donation receives a personal word of thanks from you. The core message must convey the gratitude for and impact of their contribution.

The Story behind the cause

Athletes 4 Cancer began from the hospital bed of 19-year old Scott Farman, fighting for his life with Leukemia. Sick of watching him suffer, his sister Tonia harnessed her passion for the outdoors to raise funds and awareness for cancer. In the process, what transpired was something much bigger. Recognizing the powerful healing combination of the elements, profound personal relationships, and overcoming personal challenges in the outdoors, a program was born that would memorialize Scott’s struggle with cancer and help future fighters rebuild their lives after cancer.

The Challenge

The after-effects of surviving cancer are often more difficult than the treatment itself. Despite the hundreds of cancer foundations nationally, survivorship is generally an area not commonly treated. Recognizing a need for survivorship-focused programs, Athletes 4 Cancer began the Camp Koru Survivorship Program.

The Purpose

The purpose of Camp Koru is to empower young survivors to get their lives back after cancer through ocean and mountain adventure.  Camps run for 6 days, and are given the proper tools, instruction, and focused encouragement required to take on new challenges in a safe setting, such as – surfing, standup paddling, outrigger canoeing, and snowboarding.

Individuals discover that they can overcome fears of something they never thought they can do, sharing their experiences with peers at camp.  This journey at camp serves as a vehicle that channels strength, promotes renewal, and fuels passion for a healthy and productive life ahead, inspiring everyone around them to embrace life and challenges in the same way.

The Outcome

A Camp Koru attendee wrote an incredible letter describing the experience that changed her life. Her story is awesome. So is Kim's story - read her blog post or watch her video.
